Repair Windows Update Services Sbs 2008 Unified: Best Practices and Recommendations for WSUS Configu

The Microsoft Web Platform is a powerful set of tools, servers, and technologiesoptimized for building and hosting next-generation Web applications and solutions. At the base of the Microsoft Web Platform is Windows Server 2008, Windows Server 2008 R2, or another Windows Server operating system version. Windows Server 2008 R2 comes with Internet Information Services 7.5 (IIS 7.5), a Web server and security-enhanced platform for developing and reliably hosting Web applications and services. Windows Server 2008 comes with IIS 7.0. IIS 7.0 and 7.5 (together known as IIS 7) include a componentized architecture for greater flexibility and control. IIS 7 and above also provides simplified management and powerful diagnostic and troubleshooting capabilities. IIS Manager extensions make it easy to administer local and remote Web servers.

All Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008/R2 customers received an update on January 14, 2020 as the operating systems were in support until then. Updates for these operating systems after January 14, 2020 are provided for ESU customers only.

The Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) 8.0 update lets you use the new Remote Desktop Services features that were introduced in Windows 8 and Windows Server 2012. These features are now available for computers that are running Windows 7 Service Pack 1 (SP1) or Windows Server 2008 R2 Service Pack 1 (SP1).

For more information about the RDP 8.0 update for Windows 7 SP1 and Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1, see Remote Desktop Protocol 8.0 Update for Windows 7 SP1: Enabling a great WAN user experience for Windows 7 SP1 virtual desktops.

Windows Server 2003 is the sixth version of Windows Server operating system produced by Microsoft. It is part of the Windows NT family of operating systems and was released to manufacturing on March 28, 2003[15] and generally available on April 24, 2003.[16] Windows Server 2003 is the successor to the Server editions of Windows 2000 and the predecessor to Windows Server 2008.[17][18] An updated version, Windows Server 2003 R2, was released to manufacturing on December 6, 2005.[19] Windows Server 2003 is based on the consumer operating system, Windows XP.[20]

Windows Server 2003 Web is meant for building and hosting Web applications, Web pages, and XML web services. It is designed to be used primarily as an IIS web server[43] and provides a platform for developing and deploying XML Web services and applications that use ASP.NET technology. Domain controller and Terminal Services functionality are not included on Web Edition. However, Remote Desktop for Administration is available. Only 10 concurrent file-sharing connections are allowed at any moment.[citation needed] It is not possible to install Microsoft SQL Server and Microsoft Exchange software in this edition without installing Service Pack 1[citation needed]. Despite supporting XML Web services and ASP.NET, UDDI cannot be deployed on Windows Server 2003 Web[citation needed]. The .NET Framework version 2.0 is not included with Windows Server 2003 Web, but can be installed as a separate update from Windows Update.[citation needed]

Windows Server 2003 R2 is an updated release of Windows Server 2003, which contains a copy of Windows Server 2003 SP1 on one CD and a host of optionally installed new features on another disc, similar to Microsoft Plus! for Windows 95.[84] It was released to manufacturing on December 6, 2005, for IA-32 and x64 platforms, but not for IA-64.[85] It was succeeded by Windows Server 2008.

Attackersoften gain access to servers through unused or not configured ports and services. To limit entry points, server hardening includes blocking unused ports and protocolsas well as disabling services that are not required. Although this can be done asseen above using the SCW, the server administrator would need to double check to seeif all the services are configured properly and that only the necessary ports areopen.Duringthe installation of the 2008 server, by default, three local user accounts are automaticallycreated: the Administrator, Guest and Help Assistant. The Administrator account bearshigh privileges, and requires special diligence. As a security best practice the administratoraccount should be disabled or renamed to make it more difficult for an attacker togain access. BothGuest and Help Assistant accounts provide an easy target for attackers which exploitedthis vulnerability before on the earlier Windows Server 2003. Theseaccounts should be disabled at all times.

Go offline: Network isolation is a credible option for extending the lifespan of WS2008 & WS2008R2. Isolating all Sever 2008/2008R2 instances from central services will significantly reduce the risk of a breach. If possible, cut off any connection to the internet unless absolutely necessary.

  • To browse the directory for restore destination, file copysource, copy recovery point destination, and mount recoverypoint location, the path limit is 255 characters.

  • To browse the directory for backup destination and filecopy destination, the path limit is 156 characters.

  • After you rename a Microsoft Exchange database, reboot theMicrosoft Exchange server. Otherwise, the MicrosoftExchange VSS writer does not update the database name andArcserve UDP Agent (Windows) still displays the olddatabase name.

  • The following tasks fail on Windows 2008 core and Windows2008 R2 core machines:Mount recovery point

  • File copy

  • Catalog-less backup browse and search

  • To allow you to troubleshoot your computer problemeffectively, Arcserve UDP Agent (Windows) does not work inthe Windows Safe Mode.

  • To avoid a possible time sync error, if you change thesystem time when the browser is connected to the ArcserveUDP Agent service, close the browser and log in again.

  • After switching to the Arcserve UDP Recovery Point View andmounting a volume under the recovery point, if thatrecovery point is also included in a merge job, the mergejob will fail. To avoid this problem, switch back to theNormal view for the merge job to succeed.

6.0 Issues FixedThe following list identifies the fixes included in thecurrent release of Arcserve UDP:
