Most water heaters last about 10 years with routine maintenance. While it is certainly true that many water heaters can last 15 and even 20 years, that is not the norm. Any water heater that is beyond the 10-year mark should be considered at the end of its normal life and a replacement should be installed. Waiting to replace your water heater until it fails is a recipe for disaster.
There is actually not a huge difference between brands. While some models have different options such as Wi-Fi controls, only a handful of manufacturers in the United States build water heaters. This small group produces most of the water heaters installed today.
Most water heaters have a general life expectancy of about 10 years. Anytime I see a water heater during a home inspection that is around this age I always make sure my client understands that many water heaters have failed and flooded homes.
Tankless water heaters have a general life expectancy of about 20 years with normal maintenance. While they last about twice as long as their tank counterparts, they can cost up to two to three times what a normal tank-style water heater does.
Supporting the Quality Department by performing material and product receiving inspections, performing FAIs and conformance inspections, issuing NCRs for rejected or non-conforming parts, maintaining and scheduling equipment calibration, communicating with Suppliers regarding non-conforming or rejected parts, and issuing and maintaining serial numbers for newly manufactured product.
Envirotemp water heaters are produced by American Water Heaters - you can contact them at americanwaterheater.com to ask for a copy of the warranty for your unit. Your unit was made in the 14th week of 2002.
If we assume that your Envi-ro-temp water heater is an Envirotron product I can give this information from CDA's technical reference cited in our References section: Envirotron went out of business around 1980 - which would your heater at least 33 years old.
Also see products manufactured under the name Atlascare Tel: 905-829-1296. Is your water heater a solar unit? In any event, because the year of manufacture was typically coded in the first two digits, from the serial number serial # 9812126163 I would bet your heater was made in year 98, month 12, or December 1998. Use the CONTACT US link at page top or bottom to send me some photos of the heater and closeups of its labels and I can research further.
@Michael n Peterson,Sure: in the master index to water heater manufacturers, manuals, etc. given atWATER HEATER AGE & MANUALS - home inspectapedia.com/plumbing/Water-Heater-Age-Manuals.phpwe find "American" water heater brand"AMERICAN / AMERICAN STANDARD WATER HEATER AGE & MANUALSinspectapedia.com/plumbing/American-Water-Heater-Age-Manuals.php
@KBF500, Of course it's safest to consult the specific installation manual for your brand and model, but the generic Envirotemp water heater manual that we checked we have the following text - as is common for most water heaters: THE WATER HEATER IS CERTIFIED FOR INSTALLATION ON A COMBUSTIBLE FLOOR.
FAILURE TO FOLLOW THESE INSTRUCTIONS MAY RESULT IN A FIRE HAZARD. Though I don't often see it, some building code jurisdictions or for other reasons at some water heater installations the plumber might put a drip pan below the heater to catch and ease early detection of small leaks. Shown here is an example water heater drip pan sold by Whirlpool but is a generic product.
@Ronda Dowdy, If your Envirotemp water heater is a GAS fueled model the temperature control is right on the gas control at the bottom of the water heater. An example of such as gas water heater control is below: see that black dial. Notice the arrow. The dial will have temperature level indicators. If your water heater is electric the control is behind a metal plate on the heater front - We can offer more answers if you help us understand the question more-specifically: what kind of heater, what temperature? Heater brand, model, age, are also helpful. Post a photo of your heater. IN a second comment post a photo of any visible controls or panels.
On an oil fired water heater you an see the control, marked by the red arrow in this photo - a -protected image that was plagiarized by and actually taken without permission from InspectApedia.com.
Bill the most-common decoding for Envirotemp water heater serial numbers to get the age is in the format Serial #YYWW123456 so yours would be YY = 11 or 2011 and WW = week 17

RussASSUMING you're talking about an electric water heater such as an Envirotemp 50-gallon electric water heater (or calorifier or geyser depending on terminiogy where you live) most electric water heaters use a 220VAC. You should NOT, however, wire up your heater at all before you have the installation instructions for your specific model. Making a mistake could be a disaster. I could not find an Envirotemp electric water heater with your model number 08200. Try attaching photos of your heater and its data tags and I can research this further.
There is also Solatherm-Envirotron, 1983 Solar Hot Water System for a Newspaper Building: Final Report Solatherm Envirotron, 1981 [book about 151 pages) This company published a number of solar water heater studies and documents.

So I got a new hot water heater, the smell was due to being 16 yrs old. Now the smell is still there, but it is faint. My question is does it take time for the smell to permanently disappear? (I've had the new water heater for about 1.5 weeks)Thanks in advance

But I'm not sure how we'd ever get to week #86 in the year 2007. Is it possible that you mis-read the number?

Before going further, I want to point out the differences between a water heater manufacturer and a water heater brand. The manufacturer is the company that takes materials or components to create (or manufacture) the water heater.
Below are serial number lookup sections for every major water heater manufacturer. Column one lists all the various brands that manufacturer makes, column two shows sample serial numbers, and column three of each table acts as a serial number decoder.
GIV serial numbers 1000-1499 must complete CB194A or ASC 469 Water Line Ribbon Heater Upgrade by September 4, 2011. As we move closer to the deadline, demand is higher and parts are not as readily available as they were just a few months ago. Based on our customer network, we estimate that approximately 30-35% of the fleet has not yet complied with this mandate. Consequently, we believe that the demand and lead time for parts will increase significantly throughout this spring and summer. 2ff7e9595c
